What is the right way to use the verb ‘throw’?

Please explain the correct usage of ‘throw’.

Does it always have to accompany ‘away’?

Like, can we say:

a) This pen is useless. Throw it.
b) Sudhir threw his pen.
c) Sanju threw his pencils away.
