“The man” is used idiomatically, as a phrase and acquires special meaning.
The man is generally used in one of the following meanings:
i) A person of authority who controls others or oppresses them. It could be a man of the government, establishment, boss or anyone who has power over you and stamps his authority or oppresses you.
Examples:
i) The Man in my office doesn’t let me breathe easy.
ii) The Man takes away one third of my salary as tax.
iii) The Man does grant me leave despite my illness.
ii) It can also be used in a complimentary sense – when you want to convey that someone has achieved a great accomplishment or has done something extraordinary. Generally, the usage is “You are the man”.
Examples:
i) What? You won an Olympic gold medal and then topped the UPSC exam too? You’re the man.
ii) You manage to get a treat from the miser Mr Shukla? You are the man!
iii) He is the man. He can impress any girl in five minutes.
