Amitabh featured in a lot of below average movies in the nineties but then he began acting his age in the movies and regained his place of pride.
Practical vocabulary lessons teach you new words and phrases and quickly make you conversant with their usage. So that you not only learn a new phrase, you also know how to use it.
In this post, we will discuss the phrase, “Act your age”.
Now, when would you ask someone to act his age?
Check out the video if you have forgotten the movie or the songs.
Let’s take some examples:
- My boss is a fat, middle aged balding man but tries to flirt with any new girl in the office, even the interns. I wish someone tells him to act his age.
- You cannot expect to always have your way, Rajesh. Act your age and try to understand that sometimes, you might be wrong too.
- It is very difficult to talk to him. He starts shouting and screaming and never listens to others. It’s time he learnt to act his age – he is too old for such tantrums.
You say act your age to someone who is behaving in a silly, childish manner completely opposite to the mature behavior expected from someone his or her age. Thus, when someone who is a grown up behaves in an immature way, you would ask him to act his age.
Let’s take some more examples:
- Your brother keeps watching cartoon shows and playing computer games the whole day. Ask him to act his age, he is already in college. If he doesn’t get serious about his career now, he will be left behind.
- I think you should act your age now. Getting drunk with guys half your age and then creating a ruckus in the neighborhood doesn’t look nice.
- Whenever something disagrees with him, he behaves like a child unhappy with his birthday present. He would shout, he would scream and he would make it difficult for everyone. Someone please tell him to act his age.
