Better English Speaking - Pull herself together

Japan was destroyed in the second world war but it pulled itself together really well.

Sanjeev was rejected in seven interviews he faced due to bad English speaking skills. He was devastated. Then, however, he pulled himself together and worked on his English speaking skills, his interview preparation, his technical skills as well as his confidence. Finally, he got his dream job in the tenth interview he faced.

Suresh’s father died when he was a young kid. However, her mom quickly pulled herself together, took up a job and gave the best possible upbringing to her kids. It was due to her hard work and sacrifice that both Suresh and his sister got selected in the prestigious IAS service.

“Pull oneself together” means gathering oneself, composing oneself after a misfortune or a crisis. It means not getting overwhelmed by the bad situation but gathering one’s wits, maintaining ones composure and doing what is necessary to come out of the crisis and get on with life.

It is an advice you’d give to someone facing a major problem to keep thinking coolly and take positive action to solve the problem. It is how you would describe someone who bounces back from a tragedy. It can be used for individuals, for a group of people, communities or even entire countries.

  2. His family lost everything in the riots during the partition of India. However, they pulled themselves together really well and established a business in Delhi. Today, they are amongst the most prosperous families in the city.
  3. After the destruction in the second world war, Japan pulled itself together as a nation and very soon became one of the most advanced economies of the world and a center of innovation.
