“Own worst enemy” – the sense is pretty straightforward. You are your own worst enemy when you are doing certain things which are sure to harm you or prevent you from being successful or happy or liked. Similarly, you’d be your own worst enemy if you are not doing certain things, doing which would make you successful. Let’s look at some more examples:
- A man is his own worst enemy. Most of the times, his own actions create troubles for him which finally get him.
- He is such a talented boy but he is being his own worst enemy. He doesn’t go to college, is not serious about his career and has fallen into bad company. He needs someone to tell him to mend his ways.
- Vinod Kambli started his career with a bang. Everyone recognized that he was hugely talented, possibly more than even Sachin Tendulkar. But, he turned out to be his own worst enemy. The glitz and glamour of Indian cricket got the better of him, his performance dropped and soon he was out of the national team. It was not long before his cricket career was all but over.
Thus, if someone behaves irresponsibly or creates problems through his own actions, he can be described as being his own worst enemy.
It can be used for an individual, for a community, country or any other group of people.
