Better Spoken English - Turns heads

Even at her age, Rekha turns heads wherever she goes

Time for yet another new English phrase. Time for yet another step towards better spoken English.

Let’s first look at our target phrase in action:

  1. Such is the aura of gorgeous Rekha that she turns heads even in her 60’s.
  2. Smita turns heads wherever she goes. You’d think she is a model but far from that, she is the topper of her University and studying to become a lawyer.

“Turns heads” means someone is so pretty or attractive, people turn their heads to see her even when she is past them. It is generally used of girls.

A close relative of this term is a head turner which is the same idea employed as a noun. Thus, you may have sentences like:

She is a head turner. Everywhere she goes, she charms people with her good looks and nice manners.

Or,

His girlfriend is a head turner. She is the center of attraction everywhere she goes.

Simply said, someone turns heads when someone is unusually attractive.  Let’s take some more examples:

  1. Post motherhood too, Aishwarya Rai is as much a head turner as she ever was.
  2. She is a breathtaking headturner. Everyone thinks she is a supermodel. Many have suggested her to take up Bollywood but she is happy being a doctor.
  3. Looks do matter especially in areas such as acting and modelling. Although, you are right, not everyone in Bollywood is a stunning headturner but most of them are more beautiful than your average Jane.
  4. Sudhir praises his girlfriend a bit too much. She is pretty but wouldn’t turn heads in a gathering. She is just like a lot of girls who are pretty, nothing outstanding.
  5. Hema Malini is one of the most gorgeous women of all times. She turns heads wherever she goes. She might have aged but her grace and elegance has only bettered with time.
