2. The party chief was mad enough to chew nails when he learnt of the controversial statement given by his party spokes person. In an uncharacteristic fit of rage, he shouted at the spokesperson and fired him.

You are mad enough to chew nails when you are so angry, you have lost your mind. When someone goes crazy because of anger, you’d say he is angry enough to chew nails (yes, that’s another variant of the same phrase) or mad enough to chew nails.
