Now, what comes to mind when you see the word spin? For us in India, we would associate spin immediately with bowling – Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Shane Warne, Saqlain Mushtaq. And what is the distinguishing feature of spin bowling – it seems it is going towards off stump and it turns and goes towards leg stump; or vice versa. A twist, a turn, expect something and something else happens, guile, deception – that’s what you’d usually associate with spin.

And who is a doctor – well, in short, an expert.

Thus, a spin doctor is an expert in delivering spins.

So all those highly paid spokespersons of political parties who come out when a leader is caught in a scam and say that it is an opposition conspiracy are spin doctors. PR experts of large corporates who give press statements when some controversy erupts to sugar coat the incident and convince people that all is well.

Let’s take some examples:

1. The effect of rising prices is being felt by the common people and this coupled with a new scam being unearthed everyday has made the environment very negative for the ruling party. No effort by the spin doctors of the party would be able to help the party in the elections.
2. When the controversy around toxins in the cold drinks emerged, spin doctors of Coke and Pepsi tried to highlight the long history and environment friendly initiatives of the company.
3. When the accident happened at the construction site, the builder’s spin doctors tried to portray it as an accident caused due to the laborers carelessness.
4. When a woman was raped in Kolkata, the government’s spin doctors tried to portray the incident as one caused due to provocative dressing by the victim herself. They also tried to cast aspersions on the woman’s character.
