Better English speaking - Flavor of the season

Esha Gupta seems to be the flavor of the season

Keep working to improve your English speaking skills. Keep learning something new everyday, keep expanding your range of expressions.

The phrase we discuss in this post is, “Flavor of the month”.

Flavor of the month means something which is a rage these days but may not remain so for long. Thus a trend, a fad or a sudden fashion trend which may not last – all of these would qualify for being the flavor of the month.

It can also be used for certain ways of thinking or certain concepts and ideas which may be popular now but lack the staying power to remain popular for long.

Let’s take some examples:

  1. Bhatt camp takes a new girl to pair with Emran Hashmi, adds a liberal dose of sex, combines it with usually hummable music and delivers a mid budget film which is usually recovers its cost and makes the makers enough money. Esha Gupta (Jannat 2, Raaz 3) seems to be the new flavor of the month with them.
  2. Role play exercises have suddenly become the flavor of the month though very few people really understand them and fewer still know how to use them effectively as a training tool.

A temporary trend which the speaker does not have a lot of respect for is usually the right candidate for such description. You normally use this phrase to disparage and even mock an idea which you do not like but is getting very popular.

Let’s take some more examples:

  1. Hiring wedding planners is the flavor of the month in Delhi marriages. I do not understand what value they provide.
  2. Super expensive gyms in swanky localities seem to be the flavor of the month. I don’t know if they really build people’s bodies but there is a lot of rush in these air conditioned places with high-tech machinery and lot of eye candy as well.
