His heart sank when he came to know that superior English speaking skills are necessary for selection in a good MBA college. However, his seniors guided him well and helped him improve his English speaking. Finally, he did manage to get selected into one of the premium MBA colleges of the country.
What could possibly be the meaning of someone’s heart sinking? It obviously doesn’t sound very pleasant!!!
Well, when you say your heart sank, you are basically saying that you got worried because of something you saw or heard or came to know. It is a bad feeling you get when you realize you have come to the examination center but forgot your admit card back home or when you go to your girlfriend to propose but see her wearing an engagement ring.
Let’s take some examples:
- Shobhit switched on the TV to check the scores but his heart sank at the headlines. There was a major bomb blast in Delhi.
- His heart sank when he opened the score card and saw that he had scored much less than the required marks.
- It was his first movie and his heart sank to hear the reviews. All the critics panned the movie. Slowly, however, the movie picked up. Within weeks, it was declared a super hit.
- Mr Sharma’s heart sank when he heard that the war had broken out in Kargil. It was only last month that his only son, a young officer, Lt Nitin Sharma had been posted in Kargil. He quickly rang him up to get the latest news.
- My heart sank when I heard that there had been heavy snowfall on Rohtang and the Manali Leh highway was closed. We had spent months preparing for the trek and with great difficulty, managed to convince our bosses to grant us leave for 15 days and now, all our plans and effort would go waste due to untimely snowfall.
It’s a foreboding about something unpleasant, its the strange feeling you get when you expect something bad to happen – that’s your heart sinking for you!
