Crossing someone’s path means meeting someone by chance. So if you are walking in the market and you meet your boss, the two of you have just crossed each other’s paths. The key is an unplanned and accidental meeting. If you have fixed an appointment or planned a rendezvous, it is not crossing of the paths.
Let’s take some examples:
- Last week, my old friend Sunil crossed my path. He was very thin and dressed in rags. He later told me that once his girlfriend dumped him, he lost interest in everything and lost his job.
- The young gangster was careful not to cross the path of the drug lord of his area. He kept a low profile but kept on expanding his activities. Then, one day, in a daring attack, he bumped off the reigning mafia king and became the biggest gangster of the area.
- Take him away and tell him not to cross my path again. If I ever came to know that he is upto his activities once again, I will throw him in jail and this time, he won’t be able to come out for twenty years.
Use this phrase to express the idea of a chance meeting – whether pleasant or otherwise. It may even be someone you actually don’t want to meet.
Some more examples:
- Sallu was walking in the mall with his girlfriend when his wife crossed his path. You should have been there to see it. The lady chased him through the mall onto the road. The poor girlfriend was embarrassed like hell.
- We never crossed each other’s path despite being in the same University for five years. Isn’t it amazing?
- The old lovers crossed each other’s path at a college reunion and the old flames were reignited.
