Sudhir was always ready with some juicy gossip from the college. “Did you see?”, he whispered, “Mahesh made a pass at the cute spoken English trainer in the communications class today”.
“Shut up”, I said.
Make a pass means trying to flirt with someone. The crude Hindi equivalent would be लाइन मारना. It could also mean saying or doing something so as to suggest that you want to start a sexual relationship with them.
Thus whenever someone tries to impress a girl by saying something flirtatious, you’d say that he is making a pass at her.
Let’s take some examples:
- “Men are always making passes at me”, said the Bollywood actress, “But I am yet to find my prince charming”.
- The way he makes a pass at every girl around, it seems like he is really desperate. Infact, if you appear so needy, no girl would ever be impressed with you.
- She becomes uncomfortable every time someone makes a pass at her. Now that she is going to Mumbai for her job, she will have to learn to handle such situations smartly.
- Can you believe it? Sudha made a pass at me yesterday!
It is a pretty safe phrase and can be used in pretty much any setting, formal or informal.
Let’s close with some more examples:
- Being a ramp model is pretty stressful. You have to look good all the time. You have to keep smiling always, even if you are not happy on the inside. And then, there are always a variety of men making passes at you ranging from gutkha chewing property dealers to armani clad businessmen.
- Rohit tried to make a pass at me yesterday. I told him that I did not like these things and would file a sexual harassment complaint if he ever crosses my path again.
