Improve spoken English - Down the pike

To improve spoken English skills, listen to TV news, read newspaper and if you do it for long enough, some time down the pike, you would be speaking English as if you have been speaking it forever.

Down the pike is an American phrase – it means some time later (very similar to some time down the line). It can also be used with s specific statement of time – eg two months down the pike or three years down the pike. In such cases, it means so many days later from today.

Let’s take some examples:

  1. Ten years down the pike, Indian army would be a completely different force. With massive modernization efforts in full swing, we will soon have a state of the art armed force ready to take up any challenge in the new millenium.
  2. If he doesn’t take care of his drinking habit, he could be staring at a bad medical condition a couple of years down the pike.
  3. He is working very hard on his business and a couple of years down the pike, he would be a force to reckon with.

Down the pike or down the line or down the road are similar expressions each meaning this much time later.

Let’s see some more examples:

  1. He has quit smoking and drinking and has begun practicing for the marathon in December. He is doing very well and I am sure he would be the fittest guy in our office sometime down the pike.
  2. If you keep reading such stupid books, some time down the pike your ability to think and analyze would get so blunt, you would not be able to think of anything apart from these comic characters.
  3. If you eekp neglecting the maintenance of your car, sometime down the pike there will be some major breakdown which will cost you a lot of money.
