Improve spoken English - Watch your back

Mafia dons have to continuously watch their back. No one knows when one of the allies would turn foe.

You don’t need to work terribly hard to improve spoken English skills but you need to be regular. It’s important to move few steps everyday rather than trying to cover miles in one day and then sleeping over it for months. Fits and starts is not the best way to improve your spoken English.

The phrase we discuss in this post is, “Watch your back”.

Why should you watch your back? Simply so that you know if and when someone is going to attack from behind. So its like you are in a war zone or in a forest looking for anacondas and a wise person asks you to watch your back lest some enemy or anaconda creeps behind you and swallows you without you even realizing it.

That’s the sense of watch your back. Be careful against people who might attack you, especially from behind.

Let’s take some examples:

  1. Work hard, be aggressive and grow fast. Just watch your back.
  2. In politics, friends become enemies and enemies become foes at the drop of a hat. You have to continuously watch your back.
  3. The business of real estate is a curious mix of criminals, politicians and all sorts of crazy people. It has a lot of money in it but you to continuously watch your back.

A fairly straightforward phrase, it is same as saying be careful, someone might want to secretly harm you.

Let’s take some more examples:

  1. There is so much politics in my office, you need to continuously watch your back. Your own colleagues who might be jealous of your success would not hesitate to poison your boss’s ears about you.
  2. It is a rough neighborhood. Watch your back.
  3. Watch your back when you travel in the Noida-Greater Noida-Ghaziabad area esp in the night. There are a lot of thugs around and everyone seems to be a nephew or son or cousin of some or the other politician.
