We at BodhiSutra want to help you achieve better and better English communication skills and we would go out of our way to do that. Keep visitng us everyday and let us know if you think we should do something differently.
Suppose you are going to your home and I ask you for a lift. Not only you give me a lift but you also drop me at my place. Now, my place is slightly off the way. So, you have to go out of your way to drop me home. You have made extra efforts to help me. That’s the sense of going out of one’s way.
Let’s take some examples:
- Ever saw how Amitabh goes out of his way to make people comfortable on the sets of KBC. That alone is enough to tell you about the character of the guy. He is not the biggest superstar for nothing.
- Why did the government go out of its way to accommodate Pakistan’s demands? I mean, there was no international pressure and all major powers were on India’s side. We should have pressed our advantage.
Go out of your way means to do things you were not obliged to do, you did not HAVE to do but you still did them to help someone.
Some more examples:
- Sudhir goes out of his way to help his female colleagues and everyone thinks he is having an affair with them.
- Being polite is fine but if you go out of your way to make life easy for your staff, some of them may think of you as being too soft and unable to lead.
- All the congress spokespeople went out of their way to defend Robert Vadra when Arvind Kejriwal levelled charges against him.
- Why did the bank go out of its way to provide interest free loans to the nephew of the minister? This was the question the court asked the lawyers.
