Measure against means compare with. This phrase can be used with individuals as well as entities. Thus, you could be measuring Rohan Gavaskar’s batting skills against his dad Sunil’s or you could be measuring Delhi Metro against London suburban trains.

It signifies comparison and benchmarking.

Let’s take some examples:

1. If the eldest child in the family does great academically, all the other kids are measured against him.
2. It is no point measuring the current lot of politicians against the high standards set by the likes of Lal Bahadur Shastri. They were a different breed and the idealism was high. Now, the idealism has evaporated and they understand that the current system doesn’t have enough teeth to bother them.

4. If you measure the anti corruption record of this government, you’d find that the maximum charges against active government functionaries has been in this government.
5. Batsmen of today cannot be measured against the batsmen of yesterday. The bats were different, protective gear was different and even the rules were less batsmen friendly.

Use measure against whenever you want to say that something would be compared to something else or would be bench-marked against it.
